NAZI PERSECUTION OF THE JEWS.
World War 1 started in 1914 and ended with the defeat of Germany
and the Treaty of Versailles. This treaty humiliated Germany
and demanded huge sums of money as reparations to the allies.
By 1921 Germany was bankrupt. The stage was set for the rise
of a hero that would restore Germany to its former glory. Adolph
Hitler, the charismatic leader of the National Socialist party
(the Nazis) promised just that.
Many
people throughout Europe blamed the Jews for their problems. The
Nazis took anti-semitism to new heights. Many Jews saw what
was coming and tried to flee but most countries had closed their
borders. Britain allowed Jewish children in, in 1938. This exodus
become known as the Kindertransport.
Those who didn't get out before the outbreak of World war 2
in 1939 knew they were doomed but did what they could to hide
their children. The film, Hiding from Hitler, tells their story.
